威尔士最著名、最受欢迎的民间故事之一是关于一只忠实的猎犬的故事。

故事是这样的:在十三世纪,王子Llywelyn the Great在Caernarvonshire的Beddgelert有一座宫殿,由于王子热衷于打猎,他花了很多时间在周围的乡村。 他有很多猎狗,但是有一天,当他像往常一样用喇叭召唤他们时,他最喜欢的狗Gelert没有出现,所以遗憾的是Llywelyn不得不在没有它的情况下去打猎。

当Llywelyn从狩猎中回来时,迎接他的是Gelert,他向他狂奔而来......他的下巴滴着血。

王子大吃一惊,一个可怕的想法出现在他的脑海中......狗嘴上的血是不是他一岁的儿子。 当他看到孩子的育儿室里有一个翻倒的摇篮和溅满血迹的墙壁时,他最担心的事情发生了!他寻找孩子,但没有任何迹象。 Llywelyn确信,他最喜欢的猎犬杀死了他的儿子。

悲痛欲绝的他拿起他的剑,刺进了格勒特的心脏。

当狗在死亡的痛苦中嚎叫时,Llywelyn听到一个孩子的哭声从翻转的摇篮下面传来。 那是他的儿子,毫发无损!他的儿子是个很好的例子!

在孩子身边有一只巨大的狼,已经死了,被勇敢的Gelert杀死。

Llywelyn懊悔不已,把他忠诚的狗的尸体抬到了城堡墙外,并把它埋在了每个人都能看到的这个勇敢的动物的坟墓里,并听到它与狼英勇战斗的故事。

至今,这里仍有一个石窝,Beddgelert这个名字在威尔士语中的意思是 "Gelert的坟墓"。 每年都有成千上万的人参观这只勇敢的狗的坟墓;然而,有点问题的是,这个石窝实际上只有不到200年的历史!

尽管如此,这个故事还是有很大的吸引力。 1793年,一个叫大卫-普里查德的人来到贝德格勒特居住,他是皇家山羊旅馆的房东,知道这个勇敢的狗的故事,并将其改编为适合这个村庄的故事,从而使他在旅馆的生意得到了好处。
