简-格雷夫人是萨福克公爵亨利-格雷的长女,她是亨利七世的曾孙女。

她是在她的表弟、亨利八世的儿子、新教国王爱德华六世去世后被宣布为王后的。她实际上是王位的第五位继承人,但由于她是新教徒,所以是他的个人选择。

爱德华同父异母的妹妹玛丽是亨利八世与阿拉贡的凯瑟琳所生的女儿,实际上是王位的下一个继承人,但作为一个虔诚的天主教徒,她不受宠。

爱德华想让英格兰坚定地保持新教,他知道玛丽会把英格兰带回天主教信仰中。

诺森伯兰公爵约翰-达德利(John Dudley)是国王爱德华六世的护国公爵,他劝说垂死的年轻国王将他的王位留给简-格雷夫人,巧合的是她正好是公爵的儿媳妇。

爱德华于1553年7月6日去世,简夫人在她的丈夫吉尔福德-达德利勋爵的陪伴下登上了王位--她当时只有16岁。

对简女士来说,不幸的是,她的顾问们严重无能,她的父亲对她不合时宜的处决负有部分责任,因为他参与了一场未遂的叛乱。

1554年,怀特参与了反对玛丽与西班牙的菲利普结婚的阴谋。 他组建了一支由肯特人组成的军队,向伦敦进军,但被抓获,后来被斩首。
