在英国、美国和澳大利亚,战争结束后将有两天的假期。

午夜时分,英国首相克莱门特-阿特利(Clement Atlee)在一次广播中证实了这一消息,他说:"我们最后的敌人被打倒了"。

首相对英国的盟友澳大利亚和新西兰、印度、缅甸、所有被日本占领的国家以及苏联表示感谢。 但特别感谢的是美国,"没有他们的巨大努力,东方的战争仍将持续许多年"。

第二天晚上,国王乔治六世在白金汉宫的书房里通过广播向全国和帝国发表讲话。

"我们的心满满的,就像你们自己的心一样。 然而,我们中没有一个经历过这场可怕的战争的人不知道,在我们都忘记了今天的欢呼声之后,我们将长期感受到它不可避免的后果。"

然而,天皇没有提到的是,盟国已于1945年7月28日向日本发出了投降的最后通牒。

当这一点被忽视时,美国于8月6日在广岛和8月9日在长崎投下两颗原子弹,这一天苏联军队入侵了满洲。
